Dimensions of a Doc M shower and WC layout

The minimum overall combined Doc M pack dimensions in a corner layout for individual use are 2400mm x 2500mm. This layout features the WC and shower area situated on opposite sides of the room.

Doc M toilet dimensions

Regarding the layout of the corner WC, Doc M specifies that the arrangement of fittings should follow the design of a unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet with a WC.

The installation measurements of the WC pan and shower seat serve as a useful initial indicator of how all the other dimensions align.

WC to washbasin dimensions

The distance between the front edge of the WC and the front edge of the basin within the combined Doc M pack dimensions must fall within the range of 140mm to 160mm.

In this particular example, the larger basin is set back by 200mm to maintain the correct relationship of its leading edge with the WC.

Doc M toilet pan dimensions

The accessible WC pan dimensions should extend 750mm from the back wall to the front edge of the pan and measure 480mm from the floor to the toilet seat.

For corner installations, the WC pan should be positioned 500mm away from the side wall, measured from the centre of the seat.

Combined Doc m dimensions for shower layout

Dimensions of Doc M shower layout

The combined Doc M pack dimensions for the shower layout align with the measurements of a self-contained shower room for individual use. Hence, designers can refer to the shower room dimensions outlined in Document Part M for their designs.

The only exception lies in the mounting distance from the centre of the shower seat to the hinged grab rail.

Doc M shower seat dimensions

The tip-up shower seat should be mounted at a height of 480mm from the floor to the seat and have a projection of 650mm.

The shower seat should be mounted 500mm away from the side wall, measured from the centre of the seat and backrest.

It must be noted that in the Doc M measurements for a self-contained shower room, there is a distance of 320mm from the centre of the tip-up seat to the hinged grab rail, whereas, in the combined Doc M pack dimensions, this distance is shown as 300mm from the centre of the tip-up seat to the hinged grab rail.

The combined Doc M pack dimensions incorporate a wheelchair turning space of 1500mm x 1500mm.

Transfer technique

For shower facilities incorporating a WC, Document Part M of the UK Building Regulations states: “A choice of left-hand and right-hand transfer layouts is available when more than one shower area incorporating a corner WC is provided.”

In terms of best practice as per BS8300-2:2018, if there is only one shower room that is provided, it should be a unisex type and preferably designed for a right-hand transfer technique.
